Farmland SUGGESTED LEAD-IN As environmental awareness grows, sustainable and organic farming is gaining popularity. One way farmers in the Philippines are avoiding chemical fertilisers is by using safe micro-organisms. They're not only inexpensive, but they help increase productivity and soil quality. VOICE-OVER: Tomatoes are one of the organic crops grown in the Philippines. And it's largely thanks to this man, Gil Caradang. He aims to spread the organic farming message -- especially the use of micro-organisms. He runs seminars for farmers at his farm near the capital Manila. UPSOUND (English) "Nothing goes in nothing goes out. Whatever you take from the land you have to put it back." SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer: Carandang hopes his seminars encourage farmers to use alternatives to chemicals. By showing them how to improve soil with microbes, he hopes to help them reduce farming costs -- and to protect the environment. SOUNDBITE (English) "One of the two major problems or concern of any farmer is one, to improve soil fertility and second is the control of pest and diseases. These beneficial microbes is very pivotal in improving soil fertility and pest control for the simple reason that the microbes help in breaking down available food in a particular ecosystem that make it available to the plant.". SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer UPSOUND "So we use milk." SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer This is how the microbes are cultivated. No fancy techniques -- just bacteria and fungi gathered from a local forest, mixed with everyday ingredients. Eating out is a major trend in Metro Manila, as is the case in other urban centres in rapidly developing Asia. This film considers food waste in the service sector. While people have a role to play when they order food, the service sector could also play a more important role. We show two best practice examples: a restaurant where food waste has been reduced to a minimum, and a school campus where food waste has been dramatically reduced. http://foodconsumption.snis.ch/ This film is part of a series of 6 films that reveal the complexity of food consumption dynamics among the middle classes in two rapidly changing, urban centres: Metro Manila, the Philippines and Bangalore, India. Based on a two-year academic research project, the six films highlight the changing patterns, practices and policies related to food consumption in these two mega-cities. Best Burgers Manila: Grind Burger SM North EDSA The Block. Grind Burger is the casual dining restaurant venture of husband and wife team Steven and Cristina Carl an offshoot from their Grind Bistro in BGC which was conceptualized as an American Diner. Both have extensive hotel food and beverage experience and decided to put their passion and expertise towards a common goal. Grind Burger at SM North EDSA was opened on June 2016 and focuses primarily on dishing out quality tasty burgers made with USDA-certified beef chuck, in between freshly baked and buttered brioche buns and topped by vine-ripe tomato, iceberg lettuce, sweet onion, American cheese, and their special caper and anchovy butter brushed on every patty. They also supports local farmers by sourcing organic and sustainable produce from nearby farms. We highly recommend their grind burger, indulge burger with bacon and sautéed mushrooms and their popcorn shrimp.
