Bahay Kubo Organics (BKO) is a social enterprise based in the Metro Manila area whose aim is to develop self-sustaining and healthy communities through urban farms and social innovation. They aim to develop a community of urban growers who farm organic produce and seek to spread the use of aquaponic technology in the Philippines. Founded by Enzo Pinga, Ryan Aguas and Illian Pascual in 2012, the childhood friends were in the USA when they decided to return to the Philippines to start something that could help fellow countrymen alleviate malnutrition and food scarcity. I had the chance to visit one of their aquaponics farms, where you'll see a system that involves the cultivation of fish and plants, where one produces nutrients to nourish and sustain the other. In the last two years, Ryan Antonio’s family has been reaping a heaven-sent blessing of good health through organic agriculture (OA). As the nation once again observes Nutrition Month, the 36-year-old farmer looks for ways for his children to inherit the discipline that can help enhance the Philippines’ soil fertility, while ensuring farmers’ and consumers’ health and welfare, and most importantly, minimizing the destruction of the environment. “Bukod po sa nakakatulong ito sa pagdudulot sa amin ng pang-araw-araw naming konsumo ng gulay, napapanatili pa nitong malusog ang aming mga anak,” Antonio said in an interview with Manila Bulletin (MB) in Barangay Aulo, Palayan City in Nueva Ecija, where his family serves as stewards to an eight-hectare farm.

Farmland SUGGESTED LEAD-IN As environmental awareness grows, sustainable and organic farming is gaining popularity. One way farmers in the Philippines are avoiding chemical fertilisers is by using safe micro-organisms. They're not only inexpensive, but they help increase productivity and soil quality. VOICE-OVER: Tomatoes are one of the organic crops grown in the Philippines. And it's largely thanks to this man, Gil Caradang. He aims to spread the organic farming message -- especially the use of micro-organisms. He runs seminars for farmers at his farm near the capital Manila. UPSOUND (English) "Nothing goes in nothing goes out. Whatever you take from the land you have to put it back." SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer: Carandang hopes his seminars encourage farmers to use alternatives to chemicals. By showing them how to improve soil with microbes, he hopes to help them reduce farming costs -- and to protect the environment. SOUNDBITE (English) "One of the two major problems or concern of any farmer is one, to improve soil fertility and second is the control of pest and diseases. These beneficial microbes is very pivotal in improving soil fertility and pest control for the simple reason that the microbes help in breaking down available food in a particular ecosystem that make it available to the plant.". SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer UPSOUND "So we use milk." SUPER CAPTION: Gil Carandang, organic farmer This is how the microbes are cultivated. No fancy techniques -- just bacteria and fungi gathered from a local forest, mixed with everyday ingredients.
